renovating the beach house
I guess Beach House is including a re-working of their 2008 single (and YSD track of the year) "Used to Be" on their new album Teen Dream which is being released next week. There's a new animated video for it directed by Sean Pecknold. Everything I've heard from Teen Dream has been typical Beach House but slightly amplified, their trademark melancholy made slightly poppier, more whole (read: it's been awesome! "Norway" and "Lover of Mine" are the best!). But I feel like this version of "Used to Be" steps back from that model a little bit. I can't really figure out what it brings to the table that the stunning 2008 original didn't. I mean, what on earth have they done with my beloved middle eight, the musical moment of 2008? Am I treating this song as something too precious? Probably. Peep the new version here. Old one here.
