are we having fun yet?

Jenny Lewis returns with a new project featuring her longtime boyfriend Johnathan Rice. First album leaks "Big Wave" and "Scissor Runner" are what you'd expect from a summertime release by Lewis. She takes a lateral move from the country/Canyon sound of her solo work towards a sunny, surfy groove that sounds warm, open, and exactly like a day trip to Rockaway Beach. Even her phrasing recalls her older Rilo Kiley efforts (listen to how her stumbling from singing to speaking at the end of the verses recalls the emotional desperation of "All the Good That Won't Come Out"). Close listening reveals some decidedly darker lyrical themes: recessions, insomnia, prescription side-effects, a scary snake. But this is the Lewis I like: ecologically focused, surrounded by wah-wah guitars, and focused on a darkly hooky song instead of her own vocal prowess.
